Title: Ascension
Author: Nicholas Binge
Published: 2023
Format Read: Hardcover
An enormous snow-covered mountain has appeared in the Pacific Ocean. No one knows when exactly it showed up, precisely how big it might be, or how to explain its existence. When Harold Tunmore, a scientist of mysterious phenomena, is contacted by a shadowy organization to help investigate, he has no idea what he is getting into as he and his team set out for the mountain.
I found this book at the library on the “staff recommendations” display and ended up finishing it in about 3 days. Ascension played right into what I love in books: mystery, adventure and sci-fi. The snowy setting mixed with the mysterious danger reminded me a lot of 1982’s “The Thing”. It should be noted that I don’t like horror films/books, but Ascension and The Thing lean more into the thriller category than raw horror in my mind.
There was a section of the book near the end, 3 or 4 pages, that I had to skip. I knew it was coming, but as a father it was too hard to read. Beyond that, Ascension is an absolutely incredible read that I would highly recommend!
